Edward Lungu announced himself to the ZESCO United faithful by scoring his first club goal in his debut game for the league champions.
ZESCO United trounced Lusaka Dynamos 4-0 in the 2021 Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield final played on Saturday last week at the MTN Woodlands stadium, Lusaka.
Jesse Were grabbed a brace while Chanda Mukuka scored ZESCO United’s 3rd goal with club debutant, Lungu sealing the score line with a fourth and memorable goal.
Two months ago, Lungu made a switch from FAZ/MTN relegated side Kitwe United to the Ndola based league champion.
On Saturday, Lungu was among the 18-member squad that travelled to Lusaka to face Lusaka Dynamos.
With the champions comfortably in front, ZESCO United coach Numba Mumamba introduced Lungu, Paul Banda and Albert Muobola.
The former Kitwe United winger beat Lusaka Dynamos goalkeeper, Ndala after being put through by Enock Sakala junior to increase the tally to 4-0.
Lungu said:” This goal takes away a lot pressure from me especially that people are expecting a lot from me. ZESCO United is a big club as such it is important for me to start the new season on a high.”
I am grateful to the entire team for the support. There is a lot of pressure here to deliver. Everyone is working hard to be in the team.”
The ZESCO United winger says he wasn’t disappointed with the coaches decision to start him from the bench.
“Football is about waiting for your time to come and respecting the coach’s decision. I knew that my time was going to come. I am delighted to score my debut goal for the team and winning the first trophy for my new team.”
I intend to double my efforts especially that we will soon start our campaign in the CAF champions league. CAF is a different competition as such I need to be at my level best,” Lungu said.
Meanwhile Mumamba has congratulated Lungu for scoring his debut goal for the Ndola based league giants.
“This is great motivation for Edward. That goal will give him a lot of confidence as a young player who just made a move from a small team to a big side. The young players have done a commendable job. It is our hope that they keep working hard.”
ZESCO United will next week open their account in the 2021/22 CAF Champions League preliminary round encounter when they face Royal Leopards of Eswatin on Saturday, 11 September.
