Zambian Super League defending champions, ZESCO United will tomorrow commence their journey in the 2021/22 MTN Super League when they host Chambishi football club in a week three encounter scheduled for the Levy Mwanawasa stadium, Ndola.
ZESCO United will be looking for redemption following their disappointing exit from the coveted continental showpiece, CAF Champions League.
Tomorrow’s encounter will be ZESCO United’s first league game after missing week one and two fixtures due to CAF engagements.
ZESCO United Head Coach Numba Mumamba will be expecting his charges to respond positively to Saturday’s defeat by beating Chambishi convincingly.
In his CAF Champions League post-match comments, Mumamba emphasized the need for the players to shift their minds to the league.
“ZESCO United is one of the big teams in Southern Africa. People expected us to do better than what we have done. They expected us to go further in this competition. But football is what it is especially when you squander your opportunities and your opponent’s take advantage.
We need to get down to work and focus on the league and make sure that the next time we participate in the competition we do better than what we have done.”
ZESCO United players are fully aware of the task at hand with Champions League hopes completely dashed.
Mumamba will be hoping his striking force proves more clinical in front of goal when the Ndola based league giants battle Chambishi.
Kenyan international striker Jesse Were will be hoping to make amends after failing to convert a crucial penalty in Saturdays Champions League encounter by being on the scoresheet in tomorrow’s game.
Veteran striker, Winstone Kalengo will probably be the first name on Mumamba’s team sheet following his splendid performance against Royal Leopards that saw him score ZESCO United’s second goal.
ZESCO United winger, Edward Lungu and defensive midfielder Dickson Chapa will be hoping to make their league debut in Team Ya Ziko colours following their impressive performance in the CAF champions League.
Victory against Chambishi may not be too strong a panacea to cure the fresh wounds inflicted as a result of Saturday’s Champions League exit but it will surely put a smile on the faces of ZESCO United faithful supporters and hopefully soothe their hearts and minds.
ZESCO United will tomorrow face Chambishi in the MTN Super League early kickoff (13:00) fixture scheduled for the Levy Mwanawasa stadium.
