A lone strike from an unlikely source gave ZESCO United a 0-1 victory over Lumwana Radiants in the 2020/2021 FAZ/MTN Super League week three match played at the Independence stadium, Solwezi.
ZESCO United defender, Adrian Chama was the hero of the day, scoring the only and important goal of the game giving coach Numba Mumamba his first victory since joining the side.
The eight-times league champions came into yesterday’s encounter after recording a frustrating 1-all draw against Napsa Stars in their opening fixture and suffering a painful 0-1 home defeat at the hands of their town rivals, Forest Rangers.
Yesterday’s win saw ZESCO United move to sixth position on the league table, three points behind league leaders Forest Rangers, and Red Arrows who both have seven points.
Mumamba was pleased with the team’s performance: “This is an important victory for us. We knew that this was not going to be an easy game given the strength of the opposition. We accounted for ourselves very well.
This victory shows that the team is picking up and there is great improvement from the games that we have played so far.”
Before yesterday’s encounter, Mumamba challenged his players to respond positively after recording their first home defeat against Forest Rangers.
“Today we have shown great character and determination that is why we have managed to come out victorious. However, we still need to work on our finishing. Today we created a lot of chances but we were wasteful on target. This is an important aspect of the game that we will be working on in the coming days.”
ZESCO United were reduced to 10 after Samson Mkandawire received a second yellow card. Despite this predicament, the Ndola based league giants defended cautiously and saw out the last 15 minutes of the game with ease.
ZESCO United will host Kabwe Warriors in their week four fixture to be played on Saturday, 21 November 2020.
