ZESCO United beat Young Green Eagles 2-1 in the FAZ/MTN Super league week 33 fixture played today at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium, Ndola.
With only a game to spare before the close of the season, ZESCO United have stretched the gap at the top of the league table to 14 following Zanaco’s 2-1 loss to Prison Leopards.
A 21’ minute goal from Enock Sakala and an 82’ minute own goal from Young Green Eagles, Samson Mwewa ensured that the 2020/21 league champions elect kept their winning momentum ahead of Sunday’s final game against Buildcon.
Despite leveling matters in the 72’ minute, relegation threatened, Young Green Eagles failed to find a winning goal in match that was dominated by the hosts.
ZESCO United coach, Numba Mumamba expressed delight with the team’s performance.
“This is a very good result on our part. We want to finish the league on a high and getting maximum points is something that we are happy with. We started very positively and managed to get a goal unfortunately we relaxed a bit and they equalized.
I am happy that we didn’t give up after conceding which led to us getting the winning goal,” Mumamba said.
The ZESCO United gaffer disclosed that his side will be aiming to finish the season on a high as they face Buildcon in the concluding fixture of the season.
“People expect a lot from us especially that we are the champions. Today we showed a lot of character because our aim is to collect maximum points in the remaining games.
We will take the next game against Buildcon seriously so that we can stretch the lead at the top of the table even further. People should be able to see a distinction between the league winners and the second placed team.”
