The hunt for a 10th league title may be over, however ZESCO United are resolved to close the 2021/22 MTN Zambian Super League season on a high.
This Sunday ZESCO United face a charged Zanaco side in the final match of the season at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium, Ndola.
ZESCO United Head Coach Numba Mumamba expects his charges to carry the day on Sunday.
“We are taking this game seriously so that we can finish on a good note despite confirming our participation in CAF Competitions. We need these three points on Sunday,” Mumamba said.
Mumamba is however strongly wary of the threat posed by the Bankers who will be aiming to secure a place in the top four.
“This is what will make this game very interesting and difficult because Zanaco are fighting to be in the top four. We expect them to throw everything at us on Sunday.
“It is a game that will require us to be at our best for us to contain the pressure that Zanaco will come with. They are taking this game seriously and we can’t afford to slip-up as it is crucial for us to finish on a high.
“We may be having some injuries in the team, but we have enough manpower to win the game.”
Meanwhile Mumamba expects his side to bounce back stronger following their failure to defend the league title.
“This has been a season of ups and downs, especially in the first half of the campaign. We struggled to keep the winning momentum in the initial stages of the campaign. The team only picked up in the second half which made it even easy for us to finish second.
“This is something we need to work on next season. We need to be more consistent, especially that we have a busy season ahead of us.”
And the ZESCO United gaffer has further hinted on the club’s transfer plans for the 2022/23 football season.
“We will be in the market largely with high hopes of reinforcing the striking department and potentially our defense. The striking force is something we are very much concerned about.
“Winston Kalengo will be retiring, and his focus will primarily be on getting his coaching badges. Oburu is in our plans because he did very well in the few games he featured before getting an injury.
“We need to assemble a strong team that can withstand continental competition and get us to the group stage. This should be our primary target,” Mumamba said.
