ZESCO United yesterday put up a five-star performance when they clashed against relegated side Kitwe United in the FAZ/MTN Super League rescheduled fixture held at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium, Ndola.
The league leaders put four past Haverson Chinganbu with Kenyan international striker Jesse Were scoring a hattrick taking his tally at ZESCO United to 100 goals.
ZESCO United started yesterday game without Kenyan international goalkeeper, Ian Otieno, Chanda Mukuka, Kelvin Kampamba, Chitiya Mususu and Simone Silwimba.
Coach Numba Mumamba was hoping for a strong response from his injury plagued side following their controversial defeat at the hands of Prison Leopards.
It took Were only 8’ minutes to put the league leaders ahead with a beautiful chip after being put through by Winstone Kalengo.
ZESCO United were in fine form and often proved devastating in front of goal with veteran striker Kalengo leading the charge.
In the 16’minute veteran Zimbabwean midfielder, Thabani Kamusoko unleashed a powerful shot that was comfortably saved by Chingambu.
Kitwe United responded in style with Monday Bwalya’s long-range strike that went over the bar.
Were was once again on target unfortunately his header went agonizingly wide at close range with Chinganbu well beaten.
It didn’t take too long for the Kenyan to get his brace of the game after beating Chinganbu at close range to secure his 99th goal for the club.
In the 35’ Kalengo bulldozed his way through the Kitwe United defense before unleashing a powerful shot which went between the legs of Chingabu to score ZESCO United’s third goal of the half.
The second half started in similar fashion with ZESCO United seeing more of the ball while their opponents struggled to create goalscoring chances.
In the 56’ minute, Were surged forward with the Kitwe United backline caught napping allowing the Kenyan to complete his hattrick and score his 100th goal for the club he joined six years ago.
Victory against Kitwe United means that ZESCO United only need two points to be crowned 2020/2021 FAZ/MTN Super League champions elect.
ZESCO United currently have 61 points from 30 games while second placed Zanaco have 53 points having played 31 games.
The Ndola based league giants next game will be against relegation threatened Napsa Stars just after the international calendar.
